Chimney sweep in Kansas City

Chimney sweep work in Kansas City ranges from hundred-year-old brick chimneys in the Historic Northeast, Brookside and Waldo to gas fireplaces in Northland subdivisions. Older Kansas City chimneys are tall, often with several flues, and some fireplaces were built for coal. We sweep each flue separately and tell you which ones are safe to burn in.

More on what a visit includes: chimney sweep and cleaning and fireplace cleaning and service.

Chimney inspection and repair in Kansas City

A chimney inspection in Kansas City’s older neighborhoods often finds an unlined flue or a liner that ends partway up. Those need relining before use. Typical chimney repair here includes rebuilding the top courses of brick, tuckpointing, new crowns and fitting liners so old fireplaces can be used with wood or a gas insert.

See chimney inspection for the three inspection levels and chimney repair for common problems and fixes.

Air duct cleaning in Kansas City

Air duct cleaning in Kansas City is most useful in older homes that were converted from gravity furnaces or radiators to forced air, where large old ducts and returns collect debris. After a renovation in an older house, plaster and sanding dust in the ducts is common.

Our air duct cleaning page explains when duct cleaning is worth doing and when it is not.

Dryer vent cleaning in Kansas City

Dryer vent cleaning in Kansas City covers single-family homes and the many apartments and condos in the city. In older houses the dryer is often in the basement with a long run to an outside wall. In multi-unit buildings the vents are longer still and need cleaning more often.

Read the warning signs of a clogged vent on our dryer vent cleaning page.

What we see in Kansas City homes

Kansas City covers a huge range of housing. Neighborhoods such as the Historic Northeast, Brookside and Waldo are full of homes from the early 1900s through the 1940s with tall brick chimneys, while the Northland and the southern edge of the city have subdivisions from the last thirty years.

Citywide, the median home was built in 1969 and just over half predate 1970. The older neighborhoods are where we see the most involved chimney work: unlined or tile-lined flues a century old, fireplaces originally built for coal, and chimneys that have been leaning on worn mortar for decades. Kansas City also has the most wood-heated homes of any town we serve, about 500, though that is still a tiny share of nearly 222,000 occupied homes.

Housing figures are from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, 2020–2024 5-year estimates, via Census Reporter. What they mean for chimneys and vents is our own view, based on Jake’s 32 years of work in the area. Kansas City is in Jackson, Clay, Platte and Cass counties.

Questions from Kansas City homeowners

Who does chimney sweep service on the Missouri side of Kansas City?

Jake And Son Chimney Sweep serves Kansas City, MO from next door in Independence, including the Historic Northeast, Brookside, Waldo and the Northland. We sweep, inspect and repair chimneys there and clean air ducts and dryer vents, seven days a week from 7am to 9pm.

Can an old coal-burning fireplace in a Kansas City home be used for wood?

Not safely without changes. Many early-1900s Kansas City fireplaces were built shallow for coal and have small or unlined flues. They need a Level 2 inspection and usually a liner or an insert before burning wood. A gas or wood insert with its own liner is often the most practical way to make one of these fireplaces usable.

Do you work on tall brick chimneys in older Kansas City neighborhoods?

Yes. Two and three-story homes with tall masonry chimneys are common in neighborhoods like the Historic Northeast, Brookside and Waldo, and we inspect, sweep and repair them. Each flue in a multi-flue chimney is inspected on its own, since one can be sound while the one beside it has failed.

Does an unlined chimney in an old Kansas City house have to be lined?

Yes, before it is used. An unlined flue lets heat reach the framing and lets flue gases attack the mortar. Many pre-1940 Kansas City chimneys were built without liners and need one installed. A stainless steel liner or a cast-in-place lining are the two usual ways to line an old Kansas City chimney.

Do you offer air duct cleaning in Kansas City, MO?

Yes. We clean air ducts and dryer vents in Kansas City homes as well as chimneys. Older houses converted to forced air and recently renovated homes are the most common jobs. We look in the ducts and show you what is there before any cleaning, so you can decide whether it is worth doing.
