Why Do My Air Vents Smell Musty?

A musty smell when the heating or cooling comes on almost always means moisture somewhere in the system. Here is where to look.

A musty smell from air vents is usually caused by moisture in the heating and cooling system: a damp filter, a clogged condensate drain, wet insulation, or mold in the ducts or on the cooling coil. Cleaning the ducts helps only if the moisture source is fixed first; otherwise the smell returns.

The likely causes

There are five common causes. The table shows how to tell which one you have.

CauseHow to tellWhat fixes it
Dirty or damp filterSmell is general, the filter is grey or damp.Replace the filter with the correct size.
Clogged condensate drain or panSmell appears when the air conditioning runs; water near the indoor unit.Have the drain cleared by an HVAC technician.
Mold in ducts or on the coilVisible growth at registers or inside ducts; smell is persistent.Fix the moisture, then have the ducts cleaned. Moldy insulated duct is replaced.
Damp crawl space or basement ductsSmell is stronger from some vents than others.Seal and insulate the ducts and deal with the damp space.
Dead rodent or pestsA sharp rotting smell from one area.Removal, then cleaning of the affected ducts.

What to do right now

Change the filter and check which vents the smell comes from, and whether it appears with heating, cooling or both. That narrows down where the moisture is.

When to call a professional

Call us to inspect the ducts if you can see mold, debris or signs of pests, or if the smell persists after a filter change. Call an HVAC technician for water around the indoor unit.

Common questions

Is a musty smell from vents always mold?

No. A damp filter, standing water in the condensate pan or a wet crawl space can all smell musty without mold in the ducts. Much of what looks like mold on a register is dust. The source needs identifying before anyone cleans or treats anything.

Will air duct cleaning remove a musty smell?

It will if the smell comes from debris or mold in the ducts and the moisture that caused it has been fixed. If the moisture is still there, cleaning gives only a short break before the smell comes back. The EPA gives the same advice.

Why do my vents smell when the heat first comes on?

At the start of the heating season, dust that settled on the furnace heat exchanger burns off, giving a dusty, slightly burnt smell for an hour or so. That is normal. A smell that continues, or smells musty or of gas, needs checking.

Can I spray something in the vents to remove the smell?

It is not recommended. Sprays and fragrances cover the smell without removing the cause, and the EPA advises against applying biocides or sealants in ducts as routine. Find and fix the moisture, then clean if needed. A smell that returns after spraying is a sign the cause is still there.

How do I check my air ducts for mold?

Remove a register and look inside with a flashlight. Check for dark, fuzzy or slimy growth, not just grey dust. Look at the cooling coil and drain pan area too. If you are unsure, have it inspected; lab testing can confirm whether a sample is mold.
